Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist NYC

Fifth Church is one of the many worldwide branches ot The Mother Church -- The First Church of Christ, Scientist -- in Boston, Massachusetts -- a church, in the words of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, "designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive  Christianity and its lost element of  healing."

Each branch church is self-governing and democratic. Services are conducted by First and Second Readers, who are elected periodically by the church membership -- there is no clergy in a Christian Science church.

Sunday Services include readings from the King James Bible and from the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. These selected readings, which Christian Scientists study during the week leading up to the Sunday service, are found in the Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lessons.  Hymns played on the Aeolian-Skinner organ, and a vocal soloist, offer additional inspiration.

Sunday School also meets at 11AM, and is for students up to the age of twenty.  They are taught the Scriptures and learn how to apply the spiritual truths found in the Bible and in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures in their daily lives.

Wednesday testimony meetings are one hour in length. During the first half of the meeting the First Reader of the church reads passages from the Bible, followed by selections from Science and Health. Then, during the second half, members of the congregation who feel moved to do so stand and share healings they have experienced as the result of prayer.

Christian Science Reading Rooms welcome everyone who would like to learn more about Christian Science.

The pure and peaceful atmosphere maintained in Fifth Church's Reading Room sets this place apart from the commercial bustle of Midtown.  The general public is invited to use our Reading Room for the purpose of gaining, through the study of the Bible and of the Writings of our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy (and of the periodicals she founded) a deeper understanding of the Science of the Christ.
